PROJECT PROFILES
Here’s just a taste of some of the exciting projects that are being planned for SOULINTHECITY…
Free Holiday Fun at Yerrabi Pond
(with Gungahlin Community Baptist Church)
Come and bless the community with Gungahlin Community Baptist Church!
Stephen Strong, Project Leader, shares the story behind this project:
“This year Gungahlin Community Baptist Church has felt God has been challenging us to reach out into our local community. If each person in the Gungahlin area is precious to the Creator of the universe then we’d better make that our business too! So while we were trying a few things and wondering how we could make a difference in Gungahlin an opportunity presented itself with Soul in the City.”
“The more we got into the SITC project the more we realized that it was such a great platform to show the Gungahlin community that the Church is still relevant in this technological age. Sure, we have internet-enabled phones and video-on-demand at our fingertips, and yet people are still hurting and wondering why sometimes life doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.”
“The church wanted to demonstrate God’s love in a practical way. Out of this was born “Free Holiday Fun @ Yerrabi Pond”. There’ll be a free BBQ with a jumping castle, face painting, story-time and craft for the young ones and the skating area is great for youth.”
What’s involved in this project?
Delegates will help set up, pack up, cook the barbeque, play with the kids, talk to the youth and just generally create a great environment for the community to enjoy! Delegates will also have the opportunity to hand out flyers for Soul in the Park, as well as Simeon concert happening in the area in June.
Free Girls Pamper Clinic
(with Vision Christian Fellowship)
Teenage girls can enjoy a free pamper clinic at the Tuggeranong Community Centre, in south Canberra. Girls will receive free manicures, coffees and will hear a short positive message on “What is Beauty Really About”?
The clinic is hosted by Vision Christian Fellowship. Alison Baker, one of the Vision youth leaders, explains why they have decided to run the clinic; “We wanted to do something that is appealing to high school aged girls, that would be enjoyable for them to come along to in their school holidays, but that would also make them feel special, valued and loved.”
The Vision youth leaders, like your own leaders, are very aware of the many issues facing teenage girls today; “There are so many teenage girls who struggle with their self esteem, and who don’t love themselves, and we feel this is a good opportunity to speak self worth, confidence and encouragement to them” says Alison.
What’s involved in the project?
This is a project for female delegates! Delegates will set up and pack up the venue each day, hand out flyers for the pamper clinic at the local shopping centre, and spend time blessing girls by giving manicures, chatting, making hot drinks and joining in a discussion on real beauty. What an amazing opportunity!
Gardening and Maintenance at North Ainslie Primary School
(with Dickson Baptist Church)
Dickson Baptist Church have an existing relationship with a Primary School in their area, and they wanted to continue this relationship through serving the school in a practical way. Joel Small, Associate Pastor of Dickson Baptist, tells us more:
“As a pastor I am grateful for the opportunity that Soul Survivor has provided my church to get active in the local community. Soul in the City has been a powerful catalyst to build on something we started as a result of Soul in the Suburbs* last year.”
Like all the Soul in the City projects, this is not just a one-off event. The project is an opportunity to build connections between the church and the community, in a positive and tangible way. The Principal of the school has already expressed thanks for the help that the church has already offered, and is enthusiastic for the work to continue. Says Joel; “The great thing is that this partnership with the school will live on (and does) even in the absence of Soul events.”
What’s involved in the project?
Delegates will be getting practical to the max – gardening, shovelling, sweeping, cleaning, minor maintenance and repairs and whatever other odd jobs pop up!
* Soul in the Suburbs has been regular event in Canberra, Gilgandra, Wollongong, Central Coast and Tamworth. It involves spending one or two days working on projects in the community – think a mini-me SOULINTHECITY! These events are now called SOUL IN THE STREETS and will be rolling out in a town near you in 2008!

Last Minute Advertising!
There’s still time to advertise your project to the community! What you are planning is going to be a great blessing for both the people you are serving and also the delegates involved. No matter how big, small, complex or simple your project is, be assured that it is significant in the kingdom and that God has placed you and your church in your community for a purpose!
If your church has a website, why not use it to promote awareness of your SoulintheCity project? Check out the website of Gungahlin Community Baptist Church to see how they have promoted their free community barbeque.
SOULINTHECITY T-Shirts
Full time delegates will receive a SOULINTHECITY t-shirt to wear during the projects. This is a symbol of unity across the city, and it’ll save your own clothes from any project grubbiness. T-shirts will be handed out when you arrive at EPIC.
